Why I Pay Attention to Business Registration Numbers

During domain abuse investigations, it is common to focus on obvious indicators such as phishing forms, credential harvesting, or brand impersonation. However, smaller details present on a website can sometimes provide valuable investigative leads.

Business registration numbers are one such example.

Some websites display registration identifiers to establish credibility and appear legitimate to visitors. While these details may be overlooked, they can also present an opportunity for verification.

Cross-referencing a registration number against publicly available business records can help determine whether the information aligns with the claims being made on the website. In some cases, inconsistencies may emerge, such as inactive registrations, mismatched business details, or information that does not correspond to the organization being represented.

A registration number alone is not proof of legitimacy. Instead, it should be viewed as one data point among many. When combined with other indicators such as brand impersonation, suspicious content, or requests for sensitive information, the results of that verification can provide useful context during an investigation.

It's a reminder that some of the most valuable OSINT clues are not hidden. They're often displayed openly and simply require validation.
